If you are using it for metal, get all JJ tubes. I've tried a ton of different combinations and have come to these conclusions: All 5150 models are EXTREMELY picky about what tubes you use. It's also easy to make sound really harsh.

It's got a more gritty raw tone, and it's got a little more 'roar' going on with it. I've done a lot of work on 5150's, have owned 4, and since it is my favorite amp, I've researched them a lot too, and even talked to the man who designed it at Peavey. Only problem is it's made to copy their 6505 with their settings, so once I go tweaking stuff it stops being a 6505 model and back to being a DR or whatever was used. Someone put up a preset called 6505 where they made a preset copying a sound from their 6505. I believe they had a graphic EQ in the loop to scoop but without actually trying the amp I can't be sure. I know they used either a 6505 or 6505+ into a marshall 1960 AV/BV and used a maxon 808 pedal for boost. I may know the settings they used but like many believe it's better to match the sound instead of the settings. I've tried the SLO100 and it's very loose and just different, and nothing IMO gets close to it.

The DR gets a good sounding distortion but really nothing like this. This is a tone I've been trying to copy for a long time. Problem is I've never played one and from comparison clips amplitube and revalver sound pretty different from the real thing. I'm eagerly awaiting Avid to put a 5150/6505 model in the 11R but until then I have to try and make other amps sound like them.
